Silver Pearls

A while ago we thought it would be fun to decorate some of our cupcakes with those gold and silver dragees, better known as little silver balls. We went to the website where we get some of our decorations and tried to order them. *Will ship to anywhere in the Unites States except California*. That seemed really strange; why would they be legal in every other state except California?

Here’s the deal with the dragees:

-they are considered toxic because they contain small ammounts of silver.

-no deaths or illnesses have been linked to dragees specifically.

-California was the first state to make them illegal, most other states just require the lables to be printed with “For decoration only NOT EDIBLE”

“But Napa lawyer Mark Pollock takes silver dragees very seriously. He started suing to force dragees off the California market when he was a Solano County prosecutor in the early 1990s, and got the spice giant McCormick to stop selling them in the state. Now an environmental lawyer in private practice, he sprang back into action last spring when dragees surged back into vogue after Martha Stewart used them on holiday cookies.

Pollock sued Stewart, gourmet food purveyor Dean and DeLuca, India Tree and about two dozen other distributors and retailers. As of Monday, Pollock said all but one had settled, agreeing to stop selling silver cake decorations in California, and the last was about to sign. Settlement amounts are confidential.” - SFGate Dec. 2003

So, arguments are still going on about the ammount of silver that the dragees actually contain. Some bakers are fighting to have them sold just around Christmas time. We’ll have to wait and see if that ever happens or if those little silver balls are gone for good!

Fresno Surgical Hospital

Hi everyone! A few weeks ago Ooh La La Bakery got it’s biggest order to date… we made 500 cookies for the Fresno hospital’s nurses appreciation day. We made really cute, unique cookies that we had never done before. It was really fun to make cookies for all the nurses that work so hard for everyone’s health. Thank you to all the nurses out there, we really appreciate you!

Here are the cookies we made:

Royal Wedding Cookies

Last week we got an unusual cookie request. A client of ours is going to the royal wedding with her friend and she wanted to give her friend some cookies as a gift before they go. We were so excited to try a bunch of fun new shapes, but first we had to do some research about the royal wedding to make sure we got it just right.

The first thing we did was look at the a picture of the wedding invitation online. The invitation inspired the invitation replica cookie and the royal crown cookie. The royal crown is in the crest at the top of the invitation.

Then we thought about what typically comes to mind when you think about England. We thought of a British flag and a double decker bus. To add a wedding flare to the cookies we made the British flag in the shape of a heart and put a “just married” sign on the double decker bus.

When we thought about our last cookies we wanted to do something that would reflect William and Kate’s wedding specifically. So, we created a cookie that looks like Kate’s engagement ring, a replica of Westminster Abbey, and William and Catherine’s initials.

Cupcakes vs. Cake

I think everyone has pretty much realized that cupcakes are a hot trend right now. There is at least one bakery in each town that specializes in cupcakes and cupcakes only. Quite a few cake bakers have expressed their dislike for cupcakes. When I see a baker on TV saying that they “hate cupcakes” or think that “cupcakes are a waste of time” it makes me wonder if they are really a true baker.

First of all, all the cake bakers out there who “hate cupcakes” are just hating little cakes. Just because it isn’t big and cut into slices doesn’t mean it’s not cake! If you are a real cake baker you should love cakes of any kind.

Cakes have a purpose; cupcakes have their own purpose. Cupcakes are easy to bring to kids parties at school because it is a lot harder to bring a cake, knife, plates, forks…etc.; cupcakes are just quick and on the go! Cakes however are better for making a grand display at a wedding or big party.
